 Bio-Inspired Compliant Architecture Design (BICAD)

Jellyfish Exhibit - Monterey Bay Aquarium

Survival by Compliance

In addition to "Flight or Flight",  some creatures exploit the advantages of full-compliance to achieve survival. The Jellyfish is an elegant example of a fully-compliant architechure.

Human Heart

This diagram of the heart illustrates the design of the WaveBlanket Membrane.

  • Volume is highest in its fully relaxed, most spherical state.
  • Systemic pressure is required to fill the chamber.
  • Pumping is achieved by compressing the outer membrane into its least-spherical shape.
  • Compliant "duckbill" check valves at the inlet and outlet of each chamber control direction.
  • Both system can be accurately described in terms analogous to Heartrate, Stroke Volume,  Systolic Pressure and Diastolic Pressure.
  • Can be Heterogeneously molded.

Cell Wall

Similarities to Cellular Structure

Cell Walls are comprised of Interlocked Polymers - creating a dimensionally stable but compliant membrane.
